Drediel History
The traditional story of the dreidel is that its use originated when the Greek armies of King Antiochus controlled the Holy Land. In an effort to stamp out Jewish observance, the Greeks passed a series of laws outlawing the study of Torah. The Jews reacted to this oppression by studying Torah in secret. However, when studying Torah in secret they would keep a dreidel and gelt (money) handy, so that if a patrol of Greek soldiers came near they could quickly hide their religious texts and appear to be gambling. It was with this deception that they were able to keep their Judaism alive during an oppressive occupation, and today the dreidel game played both for fun and to remind the Jewish people of their difficult past.
